Transdermal drug delivery offers advantages such as non-invasiveness and the ability to overcome first-pass hepatic metabolism, where a drug is metabolised in the liver and intestinal wall before it reaches systemic circulation. Metabolisation significantly reduces the concentration of the active drug and diminishes its effectiveness. In certain treatments, this means prescribing and administering stronger dosages of drugs which can be damaging for the body and because you are using more drug, the costs go up.

Human Skin is a key part of our immune system, preventing infections penetrating the skin and entering the body. Transdermal means enabling a drug to enter the body through the skin without making a hole in the skin from a syringe. Electroporation (AKA electropermeabilisation) is a microbiological and biotechnical technique in which a tiny controlled electrical impulse destabilises the lipid bilayer and breaks the CAMs (cell adhesion molecules) of the skin, causing the formation of nanoscale pores that temporarily increases the permeability of the cell membrane enabling the entry of macromolecules through the skin.

In the Aesthetic and Medical industry, we call these nanoscale pores ‘reversible microchannels’ which enables the SMART Serum to penetrate further into the skin through greater permeability of the cell membrane achieving better results, skin rejuvenation and hydration.

Once the electrical impulse is turned off, the nano pores close and the skin returns to its previous non-permeable state to comply with its fundamental role in the immune process; nothing in or nothing out through the skin.

The microchip is the transdermal drug delivery system and is hollow, so the drug flows through it. Proposed as a concept in 1970 it was first demonstrated experimentally in the 1990’s and the first transdermal drug delivery tests commenced in 1998. It was not until the 2020’s that the technology was developed for portable hand-held equipment for the Aesthetic Industry.

Epidermis: The outermost layer, a protective barrier against the environment and is made up of the following layers

Stratum Corneum: The outermost layer composed of dead cells.

Dermis: The middle layer containing blood vessels, nerve endings and hair follicles and is made up of the following layers

Papillary Layer: The upper layer of the dermis, with papillae that extend into the epidermis.
